The Lions gain a huge lead in Cobras

Cape Town – A brilliant ball bowling from the Highveld Lions helped to stop Cape Cobras on their journeys afterwards 4-day domestic series the leaders collapsed on the second day of their confrontation in Paarl on Tuesday.

The home team, which won all four matches in 2018/19 so far for a huge lead at the top of the table, vanished for just 138 first innings.

Nono Pongolo (3/29) and Aaron Phangiso (3/11) claimed three wickets per serving, while doubles were Nandre Burger (2/34) and Bjorn Fortuin (2/23) – visitors dominate Boland Park .

The Lions then reached finishes at a 104 for four to get a widespread lead 303 running on the third day.

An amazingly bad day was completed for the hosts, who started the day well enough with just over 10 overs to claim the top three Johannesburg-based inning wickets. Dane Piedt struck twice to finish three for 119, while the other entered Dane Paterson, allowing him to finish his 12th career five with five for 81.

The Lions dug for 337, and then came a steady performance with the ball from their bowlers.

Without Beuran Hendricks, one of the top balls players in the season, the rest of his teammates came up with regular blows to kick Cobras to 51.1 oververs.

Zubayr Hamza scored 56 (113 balls, 5 fours), but only two others – Janneman Malan (22) and Aviwe Mgijima (24) – managed to double.

This meant that the Cobras were fired for the lowest score of the season.

For their belief, Cobras resisted, as Stephen Cook (3), Dominic Hendricks (9), Temba Bavuma (17) and Wiaan Lubbe (23) fell cheaply.

Rassie van der Dussen was also forced to leave the field but Nicky van den Bergh (41) did not drive them off.

Piedt was the best of the bowlers with two for 49.
