Having received the dual lung transplant that she needed, she developed cancer. The lungs that the French patient had received were from a smoker. According to one study, the patient had been treated with childhood cystic fibrosis.
After the severe deterioration of their respiratory functions, which are characteristic of this disease, doctors decided in November 2015 to perform a lung transplant.
"The transplanted lungs belonged to a 57-year-old woman who had smoked a pack of cigarettes daily for 30 years," said oncology doctors at the University Hospital Montpellier.
The study states that the tests carried out at the time of donor brain death did not reveal any type of anomalies. In June 2017, the patient was admitted to the thoracic oncology unit of the aforementioned hospital. After two months, he died of lung cancer without trying to do any treatment.
