Mate 20 Pro | We evaluate the new Huawei smartphone | ANALYSIS Technology and science Mobile phones

[ad_1]

A few weeks ago – just hours after the global start in London – I wrote a note where he made the impression Huawei I had left to me after revealing the new Mate 20 series in the world: I did not want to be a player any more, I did not want to hit my shoulder. For the first time – at least for me – he felt that the Chinese company was playing all his cards. He put all his chips on the table. He was screaming to the world what his bet was. It may seem like an exaggeration, but I think that with the Mate 20 series, Huawei is ready to compete equally with its competitors in terms of design, hardware and software.

For three weeks I try the Mate 20 Pro, the most modern equipment of this new family Huawei (Mate 20 has fewer less and Mate 20 X notes, above all, in the "gamer" section). I have it as the main smartphone. Honestly, the experience was great and I expected something a note with my first impressions on the group. From P9, Huawei made it clear that his priority was to have the best camera to get the best photos easily. However, the video has always been his foot.

The verdict? Mate 20 Pro shows great progress Huawei in its global proposal and presents a very mature proposal. Best of all, especially for the fan fan of the brand, it is that it still has a roof to continue to offer more.

DESIGN
The Mate 20 Pro from Huawei It is impressive at first glance. One of the things that caught my attention from the beginning of the three teams (Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 X) seemed very light.
Huawei has further elaborated on the plan and now seems more premium than ever.

But, undoubtedly, what attracts the most attention is the placement of the cameras on the back. They are no longer organized horizontally, side by side. nor vertically, one beneath the other. In Mate 20 Pro's Huawei, the three cameras are placed inside a square, accompanied by a flash that resembles one of the faces of a matrix. Talking to a newspaper photographer, he tells me that – for his understanding – he is the most sensible way of placing the cameras because it allows a more complete vision.

Another thing that stands out is the variety of colors available this time. If for the P20 Pro the color that caused a sensation was the Twilight, in the case of Mate 20 Pro all looks are taken from the emerald green (available in Peru with only one operator). Of course: the colors have been weakened to be attractive, but without attracting too much attention. Yes I think Huawei It did not do so well with the pink color (it will not be available in the country yet).

With the hand already, it's impossible to notice that Mate 20 Pro has some inspiration in the latest models of other brands: the elongated screen, the shorter edges, the notch or the impressive cerquillo (although there are several sensors), the curvature of the screen etc. But, it is also good to give a second reading. Today they all do it because it's the trend. Huawei adopts these trends also and is revealed in this series of Mate 20.

Despite being a 6.4 "screen device, the Mate 20 Pro is very ergonomic and comes into trouble when we only want to handle it with one hand, especially if it is not too large. Huawei, this device also includes a rubber casing that allows us to start using a certain level of security and which facilitates the grip.

PERFORMANCES
One of his innovations Huawei Mate 20 Pro is using the Kirin 980 processor. What do you need to know about this? This works very well, is very powerful, and you will understand this. In normal use (even in heavy use) you will not get the equipment "tired". You will surely read that this processor is 7 nanometers and this is very important. You know why; Because they have achieved better performance, with lower energy consumption and greater heat absorption.

The terminal I tested was 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. More than enough. However, in Mate 20 Pro Huawei has officially introduced its new Nano Memory Card technology, a new memory card model, but for which we have no certainty whether it will be used globally. This only time will tell.

BATTERY
As for the battery, in Mate 20 Pro Huawei There has been an improvement that users will undoubtedly appreciate. The 4200 mAh allows us to have a series that easily exceeds one day. In my case, I start at 7am with a load of 100%. At 10 pm the team usually reaches 30%. I no longer have to let it load overnight. The next morning, at 6am It usually consume an average of 3% more.

And here comes the best: the Mate 20 Pro by Huawei comes with a Super Charge wall adapter that lets you charge up to 70% of the battery in just half an hour (you can see the show HERE). It comes with Qi technology that allows wireless charging and not only that: the same equipment becomes an external battery, with the ability to make a wireless charger from behind. Yes, you can power other devices that are compatible with wireless charging.

KAMERAS
There is the attractiveness of this new group. Already with P20 Pro Huawei It had highlighted a milestone in the photographic quality of a mobile device. And when it seemed that you could not do much more, come Mate 20 Pro. Is it a dramatic improvement in the quality of cameras designed in conjunction with Leica? No. But great progress is being observed. Best is that it is not limited to photos, but has improved significantly in terms of video.

In particular, I appreciate the inclusion of wide angle lenses because they are always useful. I believe that if the phone is used to record, for example, a trip, the wide angle is fundamental for the recording of buildings and scenarios in all their splendor. This can already be done by Mate 20 Pro Huawei. Now, if you add to this the ability to take night shots (which had surprised us with the P20 Pro and have now been improved) or that artificial intelligence fits into configurations, so you can win more than every shot, there is still plenty to do the entertainment.

As for the artificial intelligence applied to the photographs, I think it has improved. When creating any available scene, the colors shade a little better and the shots are no longer coming out with the tones as bright as before. Some new scenarios (such as historic buildings) have been added. In Mate 20 Pro's Huawei The blur effect has also improved. Edges are more accurate and finishing is usually good, since the background and subject lighting conditions are the best.

Portrait mode has also improved. Some features have been added that add effects (such as stained glass, blinds, etc.) Transferring the displayed image to other backgrounds. And another innovation of Mate 20 Pro Huawei is that the camera has Supermacro mode, which allows true close-ups with very interesting and impressive results.

There is also an interesting improvement in the subject of the video. One of the lenses of Mate 20 Pro Huawei It has an electronic image stabilizer. It's not the best, but it helps a lot. The image quality is good. Allows recording in 4K and no longer for a limited time, but at the discretion of the user. When illumination is bad, it also does an interesting job. The best of all is that it has a ceiling to improve and keep the user amazing.

Finally, artificial intelligence is also being used in cameras. The Mate 20 Pro from Huawei It brings an artificially intelligent coloring mode where you can keep a colored object while the background remains black and white. There is also an open background state, which allows video recording with this effect. They are very interesting and playable, but they do not work so well on a daily basis. They are in scenarios with controlled movements and lighting where they can deliver better results. You can see a full gallery here.

OTHER CHARACTERISTICS
The Mate 20 Pro from Huawei no longer has speakers at the bottom but keeps stereo sound. How; That's right This device offers stereo sound using the top speaker and … the USB type C port. That's right, the lower output also serves for sound. Of course, when you load the equipment or you understand the entry, it will reduce the quality.

As for security, Mate 20 Pro Huawei offers the PIN (the six numbers), motif, face recognition, and fingerprint reader. In the latter is the innovation: the sensor is no longer in front, or on the back. Now it's below the screen. It takes a bit of time to get used to the position of this sensor and, frankly, it works well, but it's not as accurate as fast as other sensors the Chinese company has already used to. But, on the other hand, facial recognition is very good. Fast and accurate. The important thing is that you can eventually have the three levels of security that protect your equipment, safeguarding your information.

This equipment comes with the EMUI 9 adaptation layer Huawei, which has improved a lot in the latest releases. Try to facilitate certain tasks, seeking to have the best user experience. It offers, for example, the ability to distribute Android navigation buttons and replace them with a gesture in the style of the new Apple brand models.

Several features were featured in the London presentation, but they were not yet available (they are offered to come up with sequential updates): some camera themes, three-dimensional scanning for object virtualization, augmented reality, among others. But it is likely that during the week of sale to the public of Mate 20 Pro Huawei now the software update is ready.

SALES AND PRICES
On Tuesday, November 6 – just three weeks after its global launch – Huawei Mate 20 Pro was officially presented in Peru. It was announced that the device would be available with the four carriers (Movistar, Claro, Entel and Bitel) but no details were given on the prices.

The Mate 20 Pro from Huawei enter online pre-sale from 7 to 15 November. It was also announced that one of the offers for this pre-sale would be a package that would also include a wireless charger and a 360-camera. Another offer would include the Huawei Watch GT.

CONCLUSION
As I had already predicted, it seems to me that with Mate 20 Pro Huawei has finally managed to have a "round" phone, which not only stands out in certain functions but is effective in other aspects. Beyond the prices, I believe that with this device, Huawei can deal with the most modern telephones of the contest without any problems. Real competition is starting now.
