Spanish researchers reveal a strategy that uses viruses to escape the immune system

VALENCE (EP). A group investigated by the Supreme Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) found a new strategy used by the virus to get rid of the body's immune system.

Discovered in Nature Communications magazine can help improve the treatment of some autoimmune diseases such as lupus erythematosus or Aicardi-Goutières syndrome.

The researchers used two different models of poxvirus infection. First, a virus that causes a disease like a flower, and secondly, the vaccine virus, which is used to vaccinate the virus against the disease that eradicates.

Existing treatments

So far, current treatments based on the abolition of biological activity of the interferon, such as specific antibodies to the molecule, have been shown to be ineffective in the treatment of these diseases.

The outcome of this study is that there is no effectiveness of existing treatments in interferonopathy and the possibility of modifying these molecules and increasing the effectiveness of anti-interferon treatments.
