"According to the sponsor database, the transplanted lungs belonged to a 57-year-old woman who had smoked a pack of cigarettes daily for 30 years", according to the study carried out by oncologists at the Montpellier University Hospital.

The short time between lung transplantation and the appearance of the first radiological abnormality suggests that carcinogenicity began during the life of the donor, the authors of the study added.

After confirming the origin of the disease, the practitioners explained that it was a cancer whose development would be greatly accelerated by the immunosuppressive therapies received by the patient to avoid the rejection of the new lungs.

According to Dr. Jean-Louis Pujol and his colleagues, "given the relatively long delay of lung cancer, we recommend that transplants from smoking or newly established donors be treated with care".
