Pregnant women who receive fish oil supplements daily during pregnancy are less likely to give up prematurely, according to a new scientific study.

For a long time, expectant mothers have been warned to restrict oily fish and avoid certain fish because of concerns about pollutants and mercury exposure. However, according to scientists, those who consume more omega-3 fatty acids are far less likely to give birth before the end. Researchers have recently found that taking fish oil supplements daily during pregnancy can reduce the likelihood of premature birth by 42%. The findings are so convincing that pregnant women are starting to take liver oil from cod every day starting at the age of 12 weeks.

The study found that the 11% increase in fatty acids found in fatty fish, such as salmon and mackerel, reduced the risk of a baby's birth by 11% to 37 weeks. The risk of childbirth before 34 weeks is reduced by 42% and the chances of a 10% reduction in a small baby weighing less than 2.4 kg.
There are currently few solutions to prevent premature births. However, it is the leading cause of death in children under 5 years of age worldwide. Scientists suggest taking a daily capsule containing between 500 and 1,000 mg of omega-3 fatty acids from 12 weeks can help reduce the risk.

Researchers from the Institute of Research and Medical Health of the University of Adelaide of Australia (SAHMRI) and the Women and Children Hospital examined the results of the tests with 20,000 women. They examined two types of omega-3 fatty acids – eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), found in salmon and fish oils, including liver oil.

They discovered it existed "high-quality evidence"that omega-3 supplements were an effective strategy to reduce premature births. Experts believe that this could work by reducing the power of hormones that lead to premature birth. "Since there are not many options to prevent premature births, these new discoveries are very important for pregnant women, babies and healthcare professionals who care for them." We do not fully understand the causes of premature births. Therefore, predicting and preventing premature births has always been a challenge, which is one of the reasons why omega-3 supplements during pregnancy are so great for researchers all over the world.said Professor Philippa Middleton of SAHMRI, adding that it is important to ensure that capsules contain at least 500 mg of DHA.
