"Leonardo da Vinci" of diamonds sold for $ 50 million sets a world record

The stone once belonged to the Oppenheimer family of diamonds, and Christie's is one of the most chemically pure gems – with little, though, nitrogen.

Rahul Kadakia, Christie's head of international jewelery, said the auction house has sold only four diamonds weighing more than 10 carats of the same color in 251 years of its business.

Christie's president for Europe, Francois Curiel, called the "Leonardo da Vinci diamonds" stone.
