Diabetes is a metabolic disorder, the main cause of which is the high blood glucose content persistently or chronicly. In Peru, diabetes suffers from about 2 million Peruvians and is known by the WHO as "one of the world's major killers." This is because every six seconds a person dies because of diabetes, every three new cases are diagnosed and every 20 people suffer from amputation due to complications associated with this disease.
On November 14, World Diabetes Day is celebrated, and as this date approaches, it is important to know the danger of this pandemic. The situation in our country is very worrying because today we have about 7% of the peruvian population with diabetes and many of them do not know it.
The largest number of diabetic Peruvians is on the coast, in cities such as Arequipa and Piura. In the Andean and Jungle regions the indicator is lower due to work and food, there are unnecessary foods on the shore with fat and sugars, which makes it easier for people to get more weight. It should be noted that if a person has parents or siblings suffering from diabetes it is very likely that they also suffer from the disease. Hypertensive patients and smokers are also at a higher risk of developing diabetes.
In this spirit, Dr. William Vicente Taboada, Doctor of Pathology of the Unilabs Laboratory, gives us some recommendations for the prevention of diabetes:
1. Do More Physical Activity: Research shows that aerobic exercise and resistance training can help control diabetes. The greatest benefit can be achieved with an exercise program that combines both types of training.
2. Fibers consumption: Natural fibers are excellent and can help you: Reduces the risk of diabetes by improving glucose control, reduces the risk of heart disease, stimulates weight loss because it helps you feel satisfied.
3. Maintain a healthy weight: Obesity is related to diabetes, so it is necessary to maintain an appropriate weight.
4. Periodic glucose tests: Controls will help detect and alert you if there is a change in glucose.
"At the Unilabs Laboratory, we want to encourage the prevention and early diagnosis of diabetes. That is why we have planned a Preventive Health Campaign this Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24, at our seat of Jesus, "the doctor concluded.
