Mauritania: SNIM, a new ADG for lifting the bar

#Mauritanie : The Board of the National Industrial and Mining Company (SNIM), the largest company in Mauritania, has appointed Hacena ould Ely as CEO of the company. A company in a bad state now.

At a meeting in Paris on Thursday, the SNIM, the largest public company in Mauritania (the capital of which is 74%), approved a proposal by the Mauritanian government which described Hacena ould Ely as General Manager of the company (ADG).

Hacena ould Ely replaces Ahmed Salem ould Bashir, who was appointed prime minister at the end of October.

SNIM's new boss is an education economist. He served as General Manager of Nouakchott's Autonomous Port known as the Friendship Port (PANPA) until his appointment as head of the mining company.

Hacena ould Ely was also the first director of the national airline Mauritanie Airlines International (MAI). He has been Minister of Fisheries from September 2008 to August 2009.

The new ADG reaches the wheel of a company with a disability of a huge debt of more than 250 billion ouguiyas (MRO), according to the local press.

Thus, noting the "lack of competitiveness and lack of resources," the Al Akhbar news site presents the state of a business "on the verge of bankruptcy".

Historically, SNIM provides more than one-third of the state's budgetary resources. But for the current year, intake has been drastically reduced.

The Minister of Economy and Finance, Moctar ould Diaye, explains this huge fall from the weakness of world iron ore prices.

SNIM is Mauritania's largest post-state employer, with more than 6,000 dealers.
