A New York family says they found human bones under their cellar and believed that the remains of those patriarchs who disappeared half a century ago.

Steven Carroll (61) and his brother Michael Carroll (57) said his family tried to find out all about what happened to his father, George Carroll, who disappeared in 1961.

Missing wife Dorothy Carroll, who died in 1998, only told her child she "went out and never came back," Michael Carroll told Newsday.

Michael Carroll bought the house from the late 1980's in Grove, Long Island, Brook Grove. He began to dig a few years ago, hoping to solve the mystery, but stopped and was afraid of structural damage.

The sister raised the paranormal researchers who said the home was "energy", he said. Other people, including the psychics, felt that George Carroll was somewhere in the basement.

The ground penetrating radar indicated that something was about 5 meters below the surface.

Michael Carroll's adult sons started a digging some months ago. They say they found the bones on Tuesday night.

Investigators in dental records, if available, and DNA testing will be used to confirm the bones of George Carroll. This may take months, on Thursday, Gerard Gigante, head of Suffolk County Investigators. The police do not believe Carroll has ever been reported, but the old records are missing.

The family never knows he died, Steven Carroll said, but "… if George Carroll can give you a proper burial now."
