Mexico . The escort of a child with diabetes after diagnosis is necessary for treatment and better control of the disease, said Dr. Christian Lugo, director of the Mexican Diabetes Federation.
"At the time of diagnosis, the parents feel confused, wondering why their child has diabetes, what could have caused this condition, so they feel frustrated and afraid that their son does not have normal development," said the specialist in the context of World Diabetes Day celebrated today.
According to experts, in Mexico the incidence of diabetes in children has increased and 10 infants with this diagnosis six have type I diabetes and four type II diabetes.
"When a child is diagnosed with diabetes, parents have a strong emotional impact as it is a chronic condition that will require treatment and lifelong care," Lugo said.
To address this situation, the expert said it was important for parents and family members to seek psychological support to gain knowledge and prevent diabetes from limiting their lives.
He also explained the importance of listening to patients. "Doctors need to feel empathetic for the patient, find themselves in place, build trust, persuade the child that they need to use insulin and follow his treatment properly," he said.
Dr Yael Contreras said in turn that it is important for children to eat a healthy diet and eat adequate amounts of food in addition to physical exercise, control their glucose and learn to use insulin properly.
"These are very important aspects for controlling glucose to be sufficient," he said.
Well-controlled diabetes avoids the risk of complications such as kidney failure, diabetic foot, diabetic neuropathy and cardiovascular disease.
